Charleston in South Carolina is blessed with a number of beaches located nearby. These sandy beaches, that are far from being crowded, promise a memorable day-trip from the town of Charleston. 1. Folly Beach

Located on Folly Island, Folly Beach is a city with a pretty beach that is around 20 minutes drive away from the city center of Charleston. Enjoying laid-back vibes, the beach is an ideal place to relax and unwind on weekends. Considered to be one of the busiest beaches near Charleston, Folly Beach draws in families and friends looking for a fun day out. It is also a favorite amongst fishing enthusiasts as it is equipped with a 1,045-feet fishing pier which offers unparalleled views of the sea.   

2. Kiawah Island Beach

Kiawah Island is around 27-30 miles away from Charleston, SC and can be reached within a span of 45 minutes. The island enjoys 10 miles of coastline that is covered in sandy stretches. While many sandy spots are under private ownership, you can access it by heading towards the southwest side of the island. During summers, the beaches of Kiawah Island experience a large footfall with people wanting to take a dip in the waters and catch some tan. Driving from Charleston, you can reach Sulivan’s SIland Beach within 20 minutes. 4. Isle of Palms Beach

Isle of Palms Beach is ideal to visit for those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It takes about 25-30 minutes to cover the 14 miles between the beach and Charleston, allowing you to plan a one-day trip to the sandy stretch. The water here is usually warm and perfect to enjoy a good swim. You might get lucky and spot some sea turtles here during the egg-laying season. Besides, there are a number of water activities, including boat tours and fishing charters, that you may opt for to make the most of your time.

Morris Island Beach can be considered to be one of the hidden gems near Charleston. Although the beach isn’t very long, It is just enough to experience the sun, sand, and sea. The dog-friendly beach has many seashells scattered along the stretch, making beachcombing a favorite activity amongst visitors here. As you stroll along the beach, you might also be able to spot some hermit crabs. One of the best features of Morris Island Beach is the off-shore Morris Island Lighthouse that can be reached by a tour. You will have to drive for 15 miles to reach Morris Island Beach from Charleston.

7. Burkes Beach

Burkes Beach, located on the Hilton Head Island, is a little farther from Charleston, over 100 miles away from the city center. Although it would take around 2 hours to reach, the beach is worth a one-day trip. The long stretch is covered in white sand and faces a calm sea. As the waters are safe for a dip or for a relaxing swim, it is considered to be one of the family-friendly beaches near Charleston. At times, you may spot a surfer or two, making the most of their beach time.

8. Gray’s Beach

Gray’s Beach is located in the town of Edisto Beach which is around 50 miles away from Charleston. The beach is rarely crowded and you might even find the sandy stretch all to yourself at times. As you take a leisurely stroll along the shore, you will be able to find a treasure of seashells. While the beach faces calm blue waters, it is backed by lovely houses where you might find comfortable accommodation.
