Penghulu means ‘village headman’.
Traditional Malay style houses are rare enough today, especially around Kuala Lumpur, that it’s worth preserving the ones we do have. This particular headman’s house used to belong to Penghulu Abu Seman bin Nayan of Kedah. Upon his death, the house passed to his son, who in turn passed on without leaving a clear heir. The Heritage Trust of Malaysia found it, disassembled the house, brought it to Kuala Lumpur, and then put it back together.
Today, this grand wooden stilt house is best visited via the guided tour. You’ll be given a bug spray, a fan and a bottle of water for your ticket price. The guides are very knowledgeable and will answer almost any question you put to them. Under the house, you can check out the grand, hand-carved canoe.
